Amanda Brugel

Pointe Claire, a quiet neighborhood within the West Island of Montreal is something you could call a "sleepy" spot. People unfamiliar with the term generally believe that it's an distinct island that lies west of Montreal however, this part of West Island is home to all things from the city of Lachine west. Amanda Brugel was born there and her time within the city was brief. Brugel grew up in Courtice near Oshawa Ontario. She wanted to become a professional dancer but due to an explosive growth spurt she outgrew all of her dancing partner. In an article published in the Toronto Star she admitted In heels I'm 6'1 inch. As soon as I was able to outgrow male friends, I quit. A lot of former dancers go on to acting and in the case of Brugel it was a suggestion by the drama instructor at her high school which pushed her into the right direction. The teacher encouraged her to audition for a part in the school's production. After some trial and error, she ended up as the leading lady for Anne of Green Gables. She was awarded a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship to attend York University's Theatre Program, where she graduated from the program in 2000, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts. For the last twenty years she has had her in more than 60 shows and films. The role she was most famous for was that of Rita (shown beneath) on The Handmaid's Tale. Brugel was the only Canadian part of the cast in Season 1 of the series and rarely seen.
